McCallum plays in another QPR Under-23 game

Sam McCallum continued his comeback with another appearance for QPR’s Under-23 side on Monday afternoon. 

The on-loan Norwich youngster returned to action by playing 45 minutes in an Under-23s game against Cardiff City last week.

And he played 72 minutes of a Premier League Cup game against Blackburn in which Dom Ball, Andre Dozzell and George Thomas also featured.


Rangers won the game 6-3. Armelindo Mema and Hamzad Kargbo both scored twice and there were also goals for Dozzell and Joseph Ajose.

McCallum had surgery after suffering a hamstring tear against Nottingham Forest in October.

Mark Warburton insists he will be not be rushed back to first-team action.

“He’s been out for a long time. You can’t just throw them back in. We’ve got to do the right thing,” said the Rangers boss.

“It takes time, plus there’s the fact that there’s people that have got the jersey right now that would need to be dislodged.

“Lee Wallace has got the shirt and Moses Odubajo has stepped in there as well. So Sam has got a fight on his hands for the shirt, which is what we want.

“Sam knows that, and he needs to get his fitness, but he’s looking in good shape.”

Warburton was on Monday unsure whether Chris Willock will be available to face Millwall.

Willock sat out the 1-0 defeat at bottom side Barnsley after taking a knock to the back of his knee during training.

He was badly missed at Oakwell, where Warburton’s side struggled to create chances.

Rangers are hoping he will be available for Tuesday evening’s London derby at The Den.

Warburton said: “We’ll see how he is. There’s a medical meeting later today (Monday) and I’ll find out where we are. I’m hopeful, but don’t know.

“A couple of others had bumps and bruises after Saturday. We’ll see how they present.”
