Geoff Cameron says he would like to return to QPR next season.
The American, back in training after an ankle injury, is on loan from Stoke City, where his contract runs until 2020.
He does not expect to play for Stoke again and Cameron, 33, believes a return to west London might be an option.
So too do Rangers, who will look to bring him back if he can reach a financial agreement with Stoke.
“I’ve got another year at Stoke but it’s probably best for both parties if I go elsewhere,” he said.
“Whether that would be permanent, I don’t know at this stage.
“But if it was a loan and I were able to choose which club, then definitely I would like to go back to QPR on loan if that’s possible.
“I don’t know what the contract situation will be this summer but if there’s an opportunity of another loan then I’d like to be at QPR again next season.
“I have 100% enjoyed it there and enjoy playing for Steve McClaren.
“He’s a really good manager and it’s a good environment to play in, it’s just frustrating that I got injured when I did.”
Cameron moved to Loftus Road at the end of August, having faced a period of uncertainty after the then Stoke manager Gary Rowett told him he would not play for the Potters this season.
It is a situation the player is keen to avoid a repeat of this summer.
He said: “I think the most important thing for me is that it’s decided soon enough for me to know where I’m going to be so I can have a full pre-season this time.”
Cameron is unavailable for QPR’s game against Stoke on Saturday as he is ineligible to play against his parent club.
But he hopes to return to action in next week’s home match against Rotherham – more than three months after being sidelined by crude challenge from Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips.
Cameron said: “I’ve been training and obviously I can’t play on Saturday, so next week is the target. It would be great to get some minutes in that game.
“It’s been a frustrating time. I hoped to get back sooner but the ankle specialist I saw at the time always said it would be eight to 12 weeks.
“I felt I was playing my best football in a long time, and the team were playing really well, and then this injury came along.”

QPR is not so limited they cannot afford to work out another loan deal to keep a player like Cameron who at a fraction of the $ will be a bargain.They should definitely do so with him being a big def contributor in the midfield
I'd get in quick before he changes his mind. We need more players of his calibre, especially if we lose Leistner & Freeman
