Ferdinand hoping to be made QPR captain

Anton Ferdinand has admitted he would dearly love to be named QPR’s club captain.

The defender – brother of Rio and cousin of Loftus Road legend Les Ferdinand – is one of several players to have worn the armband during pre-season.

Hughes has a choice to make.

With Joey Barton having been stripped of the captaincy, manager Mark Hughes will announce his skipper after the squad return from a trip to Germany.

The likes of summer signing Ji-sung Park are also being considered for the role.

“It’s an honour to captain this club,” said Ferdinand, who was captain for last week’s friendly at Wycombe.

“My family runs deep in this club – with Les, and Rio played here as a kid, and now I’m playing here – and to captain a club like QPR was fantastic.

“I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want it, but it’s not my decision. Whoever is made club captain will do a great job and will have all the lads’ backing.

“We’ll push and work hard whoever the captain is. It’s not about one person who wears the armband, it’s about the 11 on the pitch.

“The gaffer’s brought in people who are leaders, and having as many leaders as we’ve got in our team can only be good for QPR.”
