Conte unsure over Gordon and says Begovic will play

Antonio Conte says he is unsure whether Chelsea will sign Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon – but insists Asmir Begovic will not be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge unless a replacement is signed.

Scotland international Gordon, 34, is one of a number of keepers Chelsea have made enquiries about amid interest from Bournemouth in Begovic.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has said that Gordon is not available for a move.

Asked if a move for Gordon might happen, Blues boss Conte said: “I don’t know. There are a lot of names I read and for sure there is this situation that Bournemouth have asked about Begovic.

“Begovic is a Chelsea player and I am very happy to have him in my squad. I am very happy with his commitment.

“Only if we have a good substitution can he go. Otherwise he will stay here.”

Conte added that Begovic will play in Saturday’s FA Cup fourth-round tie against Brentford at the Bridge.

Conte said: “Yes he will start. Begovic is a Chelsea player. It is important to remember this.

“We are open to helping him if we have the opportunity to replace him in the best way.

“If that is not possible then he will stay with us and help us for the rest of the season.”

Conte said he was also unsure whether Branislav Ivanovic would leave for Zenit St Petersburg, who are keen to sign the defender.
