Warburton: QPR game plan paid off

Mark Warburton said QPR’s game plan paid off against Bristol City.

First-half goals from Ilias Chair and Rob Dickie gave Rangers their fourth win in six away matches.

Boss Warburton wanted an emphasis on early crosses into the box, with Chair and Chris Willock getting forward in support of lone striker Charlie Austin.

And his team delivered, with the all-important opening goal coming from Chair drifting into the box and heading home Todd Kane’s excellent cross.

“We felt we could get early crosses in,” Warburton explained after the 2-0 victory.

“We wanted the two 10s – Ilias and Chrissy – to get up and make sure Charlie wasn’t isolated. We did that really well.

“So for Toddy to deliver that ball and Ilias to get on the end of it was ideal for us.”

Rangers were the better side throughout, with Jordy de Wijs impressing at the back on his debut and fellow loan signing Sam Field catching the eye in midfield.

Warburton said: “We controlled long periods of the game against a very good team.

“There were moments in the game when we could have been more ruthless – and that’s the one criticism.

“The one criticism for us is that we should have been more ruthless in the second half. We got in some great areas and should really have killed the game off.

“So we’ve got to be more ruthless, but it’s a good afternoon’s work for sure.”
