Redknapp calls for double midfield signing

Harry Redknapp insists QPR need two more midfielders.

Rangers, beaten at home by Hull in Saturday’s Premier League opener, are close to completing a deal to sign Leroy Fer from Norwich.

Manager Redknapp also wants Fer’s Netherlands team-mate Jonathan de Guzman, with Villarreal ready to sell the former Swansea loanee for £7m.

The Loftus Road board are minded to only sanction one of the proposed deals.

QPR have indicated they will pay £7m for De Guzman
Redknapp is keen to bring De Guzman, 26, to west London.

But Redknapp said: “I’ve got three central midfield players; Joey Barton, Ale Faurlin and Karl Henry. We need [to have] five or six midfield players.

“Most teams play with three in midfield. Ale Faurlin, Karl Henry and Joey isn’t enough. We’re short of two more good midfield players to give you a chance.”

Redknapp has signed Rio Ferdinand, Steven Caulker, Mauricio Isla and midfielder Jordon Mutch so far this summer.

He is also looking to bring in a striker, with Rangers hoping to wrap up the signing of Ajax’s Kolbeinn Sigthorsson following several weeks of posturing over personal terms.

There has been speculation that the Sigthorsson deal will only go ahead if Loic Remy leaves QPR before the approaching transfer deadline.

But Redknapp said: “We’re hoping to maybe get another front man as well – that’s with Remy. You need four strikers in an ideal world.

“If you look at the whole squad, I think with everybody fit we’ve got 18 or 19 and that includes one or two lads who couldn’t get in the squad last year. Certainly we need to strengthen.”
