Betsy praises players after QPR win
Kevin Betsy felt QPR’s attacking approach paid off in their 1-0 victory at Sunderland.
Nicolas Madsen’s early goal ended up being the winner at the Stadium of Light, where Rangers ended a troubled season on a high.
Betsy said: “We didn’t want to come and just sit back and defend. We wanted to come and be a threat and get our creative players on the ball and show purpose.
“We wanted to enjoy the ball when we have it but be really resilient out of possession and be smart.
“We played with a lot of creativity. We wanted to give the players a lot of freedom in the final third and we showed moments of quality in that area.”
Coaches Betsy and Xavier Calm were put in caretaker charge this week after Rangers axed Marti Cifuentes.
“It was a very unexpected week for us, but the players showed a fantastic mentality,” Betsy said.
“Each day the training sessions were positive and the application was outstanding.
“If you have a really good training week, with the right level of intensity and the right attitude, it sets you up for a decent enough performance on a Saturday – and they managed to deliver an outstanding performance and result.”
The much maligned Madsen has struggled during much of his first season in English football.
But his performances have improved of late and he took his goal superbly, controlling Harrison Ashby’s low cross and then firing home.
And Betsy believes there is more to come from the Dane.
He said: “Nico’s finishing is outstanding. He probably hasn’t shown it as often as we would have liked this season, but he’s got a really good finish in and around the box.
“He’s an exciting player for us to look forward to next season.”
