‘No discussions’ about Estevao loan move and Chelsea omission ‘not about attitude’
Xabi Alonso insists Estevao’s lack of game time is “not about attitude” and says there have been no discussions about the Brazilian leaving Chelsea on loan.
The 19-year-old was an unused substitute in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup defeat at Liverpool, and his six Premier League appearances this season have all come late on from the bench.
His situation has led to speculation over his future, with several clubs in England and abroad reportedly monitoring developments.
There have been reports that a loan move is possible when the transfer window reopens in the new year.
But manager Alonso said: “It’s not about attitude; it’s been about the context of games, the start of the season. He’s a great guy.”
Asked whether Estevao could go out on loan in January, the Spaniard replied: “No discussions about that.”
Alonso, whose side host Manchester United on Saturday, added: “Sure, he will play this season. There will be moments for everyone. It’s a process for the team, for Este, for myself. We are still early in the season.
“It’s no secret that all players want to be on the pitch, want to be playing. I have to take the responsibility for that if they’re not as happy as they could be.
“He’s been training, his attitude has been good, like Valentin Barco, like Marco Palestra, like Danny Welbeck.”
Meanwhile, Maxence Lacroix is expected to be out until after next month’s international break, Alonso has confirmed.
