Guus Hiddink has played down the significance of his role in the improved performances of Diego Costa and Cesc Fabregas.

Both players were well short of their best as Chelsea struggled prior to Dutchman Hiddink’s return as Blues boss.

Costa’s winner at Arsenal was his sixth goal in as many matches, while Fabregas’ recent upturn in form continued with a fine display against his former club.

Asked to explain the duo’s recent performances, Hiddink said: “It’s not much – just working every day and having some talks and conversations in training and outside of training.

“You must not think it is a big issue. I just try to focus them on what they’re good at and not lose energy on other things. They have been focusing very well.”

Chelsea are assessing an injury Costa picked up during the second half of the match at the Emirates Stadium.

And Hiddink insisted there was “no doubt” Gunners skipper Per Mertesacker deserved to be sent off for fouling Costa shortly before the striker netted.
