James’ spell on sidelines ‘won’t be short’ – Alonso

Xabi Alonso has admitted that Reece James’ spell on the sidelines “won’t be short” after the Chelsea skipper was dealt yet another injury blow.

England international James, 26, will be out for at least several weeks, and potentially three months, following knee surgery.

James, who has been plagued by fitness issues in recent seasons, suffered his latest injury during a training session ahead of last weekend’s win against Bournemouth.

No timescale has been given for his recovery, but he is facing another lengthy stint out of action.

Manager Alonso said: “We are all disappointed, especially for him. He wanted to have a good start after the international break, but he picked up an injury.

“The surgery has been successful. We are supporting him. I wish him the best recovery.”

Pressed on whether James could be out for three months, Alonso said: “We won’t set timelines, but we expect him to be out for several weeks.

“It won’t be short. Whether it’s before or after Christmas, time will tell.”

With club captain James out, and Enzo Fernandez, who was vice-captain, having recently left the club, the likes of Moises Caicedo and Levi Colwill are now expected to act as stand-in skipper.

“You can be a captain without an armband, for sure. Leadership is important and that’s why we have this [leadership] group,” Alonso insisted

Chelsea are away to Everton on Saturday.  Emmanuel Emegha is unavailable after picking up a knock, but he is expected to return to training next week.
