I only need Abramovich’s backing – AVB

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has indicated that not all his players support his methods – but he insists he only needs the backing of owner Roman Abramovich.

It follows reports of a flare-up between Villas-Boas and members of his squad at a meeting attended by Abramovich on Sunday.

The meeting was arranged after the players’ scheduled day off was cancelled in the wake of Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Everton.

Villas-Boas played down the significance of Sunday’s exchange, describing it as “normal.”

And he declared: “They [the players] don’t have to back my project. Only the owner needs to back my project.

“I think that the owner has full trust in me and that we will continue to progress with the ideas we have.”

Villas-Boas faces an important week, with his team facing Birmingham in the FA Cup and then Napoli in the Champions League.

He said: “We have an objective to get the best possible position in the league. It would be extremely good for us if we put ourselves in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup.”
