Gusto back but Chelsea duo still out for Spurs game

Malo Gusto is available for Chelsea’s London derby against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but Pep Chavarria and Emmanuel Emegha will miss out again.

Head coach Xabi Alonso confirmed Gusto is fit again, while left-back Chavarria has stepped up his training but will not be ready in time.

Striker Emegha is also still not ready to return.

Alonso said: “Malo is fine. Pep is training a bit more, but he’s not going to make it.”

On Emegha, he added: “He’s feeling better, but we still need to wait.”

Chelsea will be without goalkeeper Emi Martinez, who had surgery after suffering a broken jaw in last weekend’s 2-0 win at Everton.

The Argentina international was carried off on a stretcher after colliding with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.

Martinez has said he expects to be back in a few weeks, and Alonso said the keeper was improving.

“He’s doing better,” said Alonso. “He had the surgery and day by day he’s feeling better, but we still need to wait.

“It will be a few weeks – hopefully fewer rather than more. The good thing is that he’s feeling better, and we need to listen to how he feels and to the opinion of the doctors and the maxillofacial specialists.

“Considering it was a bad one, he’s doing well.”

Chelsea go into the game fourth in the table with 13 points from seven matches, eight points behind leaders Manchester City.

Tottenham are 16th with six points, but they come into the derby on the back of a 3-1 home win over Coventry on Monday.
