Chelsea keeper Martinez has surgery on broken jaw

Emiliano Martinez has had surgery on a broken jaw and expects to return for Chelsea “in a few weeks”.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper was injured in a clash of heads with Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during the second half of the Blues’ 2-0 Premier League victory on Saturday.

The Argentina international received treatment on the pitch for eight minutes before being carried off on a stretcher and taken to hospital.

Chelsea later confirmed the operation had been successful, and on Sunday Martinez posted a picture of himself in a hospital gown on Instagram.

He wrote: “Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well.

“The most important thing is that we won, and kept a clean sheet. In a few weeks we’ll be back.”
