Alonso happy with Neto – but no guarantees over his Chelsea future

Xabi Alonso says he hopes Pedro Neto stays at Chelsea – but gave no guarantees over the player’s future as a busy transfer window comes to a close.

Neto was impressive in a 4-3 win against Brighton, and scored his side’s second goal, finishing well with the outside of his boot.

He tapped the Chelsea badge as he celebrated, appearing to send a signal to fans, and has featured in all three of the opening games this season.

Boss Alonso said: “In football, I don’t guarantee anything to anyone, but I was very happy with Pedro.

“He played with a lot of energy; he’s going to be very important for the team for the whole season.

“He has different, special qualities. Athletic in one-on-ones, he attacks space very well, he’s strong, competitive.

“Happy that he scored, and he was close to scoring another one. I’m very happy with Pedro.”

There are also major doubts over the future of Enzo Fernandez, with Manchester City expected to make an offer for the midfielder ahead of Tuesday’s deadline.

He was left out of the squad again, having also been omitted for the midweek Carabao Cup tie against Luton.

“We want the best for the team and that’s why we took the decision against Luton and today,” said Alonso.

“We have to be aware (until) Tuesday evening what is going to develop. We’re not sure. We are preparing for all scenarios.

“I’m sure that, whatever happens, from Wednesday we will have a good enough squad to compete in the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, Chelsea are assessing another injury picked up by Moises Caicedo, who went off shortly after coming on as a substitute against his former club.
