Tough night for Brentford, Andrews admits

Keith Andrews admitted Brentford were not at their best in the Carabao Cup win against Reading.

The League One side caused a much-changed Bees team some problems, but Andrews’ men won 2-1 to secure a place in the fourth round.

“There were some really good bits and some we could have done better,” boss Andrews said.

“It was never going to be an easy game and at times we didn’t make it easy for ourselves.

“We weren’t as physically strong as we maybe normally are. Some of that is probably down to the team selection, but I felt it was the right team to start.”

The fit-again Fabio Carvalho, starting a game for the first time in 11 months, scored to double Brentford’s lead after Callum Wilson’s opener.

Paudie O’Connor headed in from a corner to give the Royals hope, but Andrews’ side saw the game out.

Earlier, with Brentford 1-0 up, O’Connor found the net with a spectacular overhead kick, but the goal was controversially disallowed for a high boot.

Reading boss Leam Richardson said: “I think that is possibly in the top three (bad) decisions I’ve seen.”
