Brentford line up January deal after missing out on striker

Brentford were unable to bring in a striker ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline.

The Bees planned to sign a replacement for Neal Maupay following the Frenchman’s £20m move to Brighton.

However, they were unable to agree terms with Saman Ghoddos (pictured) on deadline day and had offers for Charlton striker Lyle Taylor rejected.

Sparta Rotterdam’s Turkey Under-19 international Halil Dervişoğlu was lined up as an alternative in case the deal to sign Iran forward Ghoddos from French side Amiens did not go through.

However, the club were also unable to complete that deal and are now looking to sign Dervişoğlu on a pre-contract agreement, which would enable them to bring him in when the transfer window reopens in January.

The Netherlands-born Dervişoğlu, 19 and of Turkish descent, helped his side win promotion to the Dutch top flight last season.

The striker Brentford most wanted was Switzerland international Albian Ajeti.

But Ajeti held out for a move to the Premier League and in the end secured a move from Basel to West Ham.
