Chery says he wants new QPR contract
Tjaronn Chery says he would like to sign a new deal at QPR.
West London Sport revealed last week that Rangers plan to approach the Dutchman about extending his contract after this month’s transfer window closes.
And Chery said: “I saw that. I’ll see what happens, but it would be good news if I could sign a new contract.
“I am happy here. A new season, a new start and a new contact; that would be perfect.”
Rangers expect Chery to attract Premier League interest when the window reopens in January if he maintains the kind of form which saw him score 10 goals last season.
He has already scored twice this term, netting penalties in Rangers’ victories against Leeds and Cardiff.
Chery is determined to establish himself in the top flight and moved to Loftus Road from FC Groningen last year on the understanding it would help him eventually achieve his aim.
Given that, and the fact the midfielder will be 29 next summer when he would be entering his final year of his current contract, persuading him to commit his long-term future is one of the club’s top priorities.
They could be faced with a decision further down the line if offers are made for him and he does not sign a new deal.
They will attempt to avert that possibility by seeking contract talks with Chery, whose spot-kick at Cardiff sealed a win that took QPR to the top of the Championship after the opening two matches.
No recent enquiries
Earlier this year Rangers rejected an approach from Maccabi Tel Aviv, insisting they wanted to keep him despite the player not being a first-team regular at the time.
They have received no recent enquiries about Chery or Steven Caulker despite Premier League clubs being linked with the defender.
And they are no closer to offloading Sandro. The Brazilian failed a medical at Sporting Lisbon earlier this summer and interest from Russian club Rubin Kazan came to nothing.
