Chelsea Under-23s v Exeter: three stand-out performers

Chelsea’s development side saw their EFL Trophy hopes come to an end after two games of the three-match group stages following a 3-2 defeat against League Two side Exeter.

The Blues youngsters trailed 3-0 early in the second half and went out despite Ike Ugbo’s fine double in a spirited late rally. Here are three players who stood out.

Ike Ugbo

The powerful striker was impressive before the break in the solitary striking role, showing good movement and decent touch. But he was outstanding in the second period when he started to impose himself on the home defence. He scored a fabulous first goal with a rasping strike, hit the post from a tight angle soon after and made it 3-2 late on with another well-struck shot.

Charlie Wakefield

His evening came to an abrupt end after 35 minutes when he limped off the pitch with what looked like a hamstring injury, but up until then the winger had been Chelsea’s main threat. He was pacy and direct and came close to scoring with a low strike after beating his man on the right flank.

Brad Collins

He made a hash of a late cross that went unpunished but was otherwise solid and commanding. He caught well, made a couple of decent saves and came racing out of goal on two occasions to make vital clearances. The keeper also had no chance with any of the goals.
