Eriksen scores winner as Spurs finally win at Wembley
Tottenham 1 Bournemouth 0
Christian Eriksen’s winner secured Tottenham a first Premier League victory of the season at Wembley.
The Dane curled home his third goal of the campaign immediately after the interval, as the hosts made amends for a poor first-half display.
In-form Harry Kane also had the ball in the net for what would have been his eighth goal in four games, but the header was rightly ruled out for offside.
And an improved performance from Dele Alli almost yielded the unsettled forward a goal when he headed wide a Moussa Sissoko cross at the death.
Spurs had looked to be heading for another disappointing result at their temporary home, having lost to Chelsea and been held by both Burnley and Swansea in their previous league games at the national stadium.
The Cherries went close to a first-half opener when a corner was knocked on by Toby Alderweireld and Hugo Lloris was forced into a low save to stop it finding its way in, after Junior Stanislas’ goal-bound shot was blocked by Davinson Sanchez.
Spurs finally mustered a first shot on target after 33 minutes when Kane, who had only nine touches of the ball in the opening period, shot straight at Asmir Begovic from close-range.
But with his 10th touch, Kane played a hand in a swift move straight from the restart that was finished off superbly by Eriksen from the edge of the box.
Kane – searching for his 12th goal in all competitions and 16th for club and country this season – flicked a header past Begovic moments later but was found in an offside position, and he had a good shout for a penalty when he was hauled down in the box by two defenders.
Eriksen and Alli both went close to finding Tottenham’s second late in the game, but the finish was marred by an injury to substitute Georges-Kevin N’Koudou, who was kicked in the ankle by an advancing Begovic on the edge of the box in stoppage time.
Tottenham (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Trippier, Sanchez, Alderweireld, Vertonghen; Dier, Winks: Eriksen, Alli (N’Koudou 90+3), Son (Sissoko 77); Kane (Llorente 85)
