Spurs ready for Champions League test – Kane
Harry Kane insists Tottenham’s pursuit of a trophy means more to him than personal glory this season.
The England star bagged his 100th Spurs goal in the 3-0 win at Everton on Saturday and is now focusing on the return to Wembley and the beginning of the Champions League campaign, which begins against Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday.
With Real Madrid also in their group, Kane believes it will be crucial for Tottenham to test themselves against the very best if they hope to clinch a first piece of silverware under Mauricio Pochettino.
“All these individual records are good but the most important thing for me is to try to win club trophies; Premier Leagues, FA Cups,” he said. “I have to help the team to do that.
“Big teams have bought big players but it suits us that people might not talk about us as much.
“We’ve got a great squad now. We play good football and we’ve been in the title race for the last couple of years.
“Now we want to have a good Champions League campaign this year. We’ve got to learn from last year’s campaign.”
That campaign was a major disappointment, and Spurs’ Wembley woes have continued this season at their home while the club’s new stadium is constructed.
They have won just twice in 12 matches at the national stadium.
Kane added: “I think (we need) campaigns in the Champions League. We didn’t do great last year, so if we can get through this group I think it will be a big statement for the club, considering Real Madrid and Dortmund are two of the biggest teams in Europe.
“That’s got to be our main aim; just try to get through the group, try to do better than last year and then go from there. I think the fact we’re playing teams like Real Madrid and Dortmund will help us, because it will be a big motivation to try to beat those teams.
“We’ve got to test ourselves against the best if we want to be one of the top teams in Europe. You’ve got to see where you are, and all the lads are looking forward to it.
“It’s going to be an amazing atmosphere. It’s really going to feel like a big Champions League night, so we’ve got to go and perform on the big stage. We’ve just got to go out and use that to our advantage.”
