Title would make Smith a happy Hammer

Mitchell Smith plans to celebrate his daughter’s first birthday by winning his first professional title this weekend.

Harrow’s super-featherweight prospect, 20, faces Scott Moises of Norfolk for the vacant southern-area title at the Copper Box Arena.

The Frank Warren-promoted card is headlined by emerging middleweight Billy Joe Saunders and is the first of six boxing shows that will be staged at the Olympic Park venue, which hosted handball and modern pentathlon during London 2012.

And it is a stone’s throw from the site of the planned new stadium for Smith’s beloved West Ham.

“I can’t wait for Saturday night and the venue makes it even more exciting,” Smith told West London Sport.

“Being a West Ham fan, I’m really looking forward to fighting there and it’s a place I’d like to fight at more during my career.

“It’s also my daughter’s first birthday and I want to bring that belt back home to her on Saturday. It would mean a lot to me.”

A former ABA champion, Smith has made a blistering start to his pro career and his dazzling first-round stoppage of Gavin Reid at Wembley Arena in April took his record to 6-0.

Beating the 25-year-old Moises (7-7-1) would continue his rapid rise up the rankings and further enhance his growing reputation.

His fan base also continues to grow – around 400 of his supporters will travel to east London expecting to see their man produce another impressive display.

But Smith said: “I see the three stoppages I’ve had as a bonus. I don’t just go in there looking for the knockout – if it comes it comes.

“The main thing is to go in there, perform well and win the fight. If I can get the stoppage then great. I’m an exciting fighter by nature.

“It would mean everything to me to get that first pro title and that’s what I’ll be going out there to do.

“I’ve sparred with Scott so I know a bit about him. I want to go in there and show what I can do again.

“The training’s gone really well, my weight’s perfect, and this week it’s just been a case of tapering it down and getting ready for the fight.

“I’m just so looking forward to it. Fighting for titles is what it’s all about and I want this one badly.”
