Welbeck scores on debut in Chelsea cup win

Danny Welbeck scored on his Chelsea debut as they comfortably went through in the Carabao Cup.

Hakeem Odoffin’s own goal sealed the win for Xabi Alonso’s side, who will be at home to Leeds in the third round.

Veteran striker Welbeck, recently signed from Brighton, headed home Malo Gusto’s cross five minutes into the second half.

Chelsea dominated the game, with Estevao missing the best of their several first-half chances when he shot wide.

They continued to attack after going ahead, and Cole Palmer hit the bar, before Estevao’s ball to the far post was diverted into his own net by Odoffin.

League One side Luton, managed by former Arsenal and England midfielder Jack Wilshire, worked tirelessly and defended well, but were outclassed.

Enzo Fernandez was not involved for Chelsea, with Manchester City set to make an offer for the midfielder.

Keeper Mike Penders made his Blues debut ahead of the expected arrival of Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez.

Valentin Barco also made his debut, and Jamie Gittens – on as a late substitute for his first Chelsea appearance since suffering a hamstring injury in January – fired against the post in stoppage time.
