Round-up: Fulham joy, boss wants £12m, exits at Chelsea & QPR, Blues youngsters sign new deals

Fulham v Newcastle United - Sky Bet Championship - Craven Cottage

Fulham have beaten Newcastle 1-0 in their Championship opener at Craven Cottage.

Matt Smith’s powerful header just before half-time was enough to give the Whites victory against Rafael Benitez’s side.

Delighted Fulham boss Slavisa Jokavovic hailed his team – and made it clear he wants all of the £12m the club received for Ross McCormack to be reinvested in the team.

Benitez described his team’s defeat as a “wake-up call” and admitted they were second best.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have sold defender Papy Djilobodji to Sunderland for £8m – a year after his surprise arrival for £4m.

Chelsea have also given new contracts to three academy players. Defender Richard Nartey has had his contract extended to next summer, while midfielders Mukhtar Ali and Ruben Sammut have had their deals extended by two years.

Teenage Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham has completed a season-long loan move to Bristol City.

Two QPR players have also left on season-long loan deals on the eve of the new Football League season.

Forward Jay Emmanuel-Thomas has joined Gillingham, while midfielder Michael Doughty will spend the campaign with Swindon.

West London Sport revealed on Friday morning that the out-of-favour Emmanuel Thomas was set to move to the Priestfield Stadium.

Nedum Onuoha has been speaking ahead of the big kick-off, insisting he is the right choice for QPR captain.

Elsewhere, there have been a couple of non-League signings: Defender Yassin Moutaouakil has returned for a second spell at Hayes & Yeading, while former Watford winger Matty Whichelow has joined Wealdstone.

And in cricket, despite an eye-catching 82 from Nick Gubbins and a half-century by John Simpson, Middlesex were made to work hard with the bat on day two against Surrey at Lord’s.
