Chelsea’s season – and Antonio Conte’s reign as boss – is off to a dramatic, winning start.

Diego Costa’s 89th-minute strike gave the Blues a 2-1 victory over West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

Afterwards, Conte thanked Chelsea fans for their “fantastic” welcome and praised his players for their performance.

West Ham manager Slaven Bilic admitted that “energetic and compact” Chelsea deserved their win.

The victory came after Thibaut Courtois declared that he wants to stay at Chelsea despite this summer’s speculation over the goalkeeper’s future.

Two more Blues youngsters have been loaned out, with Izzy Brown joining Rotherham and goalkeeper Jamal Blackman heading to Wycombe.

Lucas Piazon, whose future appears to lie away from Stamford Bridge, also expects to make another loan move from Chelsea shortly.

QPR playmaker Tjaronn Chery has told West London Sport he would like to sign a new deal.

The Dutchman was responding to news we revealed last week – that Rangers are planning to approach him about extending his contract.

On a somewhat less positive note for Rangers, defender Joel Lynch is expected to be out for two weeks with an abdominal injury.

Meanwhile, rugby union club London Irish are in discussions about sharing Brentford’s planned new stadium at Lionel Road.

And in cricket, Middlesex extended their lead at the top of the County Championship with an emphatic innings and 80-run victory against Durham.
