QPR in the Sky Bet Championship 2026/27: what the first 11 games say about Julien Stéphan’s side

QPR sit ninth in the Sky Bet Championship after 11 matches, with 17 points from four wins, five draws and two defeats. They are six points off the top and three behind the play-off places, a solid position for a club that finished 15th in Julien Stéphan’s first season. The last week sums up their campaign so far: a 4-1 win over Derby at Loftus Road, then a 3-0 defeat at Birmingham, with a season-ending injury to Amadou Mbengue in between.
The Championship carries the Sky Bet name, and with QPR due to play four league games between 24 October and 7 November, the timing of any new account matters. The current Sky Bet sign up offer gives its free bets a 30-day expiry, long enough to cover that whole run of Swansea, Southampton, Burnley and Lincoln, rather than forcing a decision on a single weekend.
A strong start, then a run of draws
QPR opened the season in impressive form. Away wins at Portsmouth and Blackburn and a home victory over Cardiff put them second after four games, inside the automatic promotion places. A narrow home defeat to Middlesbrough ended that early run, and what followed was a long sequence of draws, against Charlton, West Brom, Preston and West Ham among others.
Those draws kept QPR in touch without letting them pull clear. Before the trip to Birmingham, they had gone five Championship matches unbeaten and matched Birmingham exactly, both on 17 points from four wins, five draws and one defeat after ten games.
A strong away record, until Birmingham
Much of QPR’s early-season solidity came on the road. Before the 3-0 defeat at St Andrew’s, they were unbeaten in five away league matches and had the best away defensive record in the division. The Birmingham result was their heaviest of the season and dropped them from fifth to ninth.
At home, the record is more mixed: two wins, two draws and one defeat from five games at Loftus Road. The Derby result showed what the side can do when chances are taken, with four different scorers in Alfie Lloyd, Nicolas Madsen, Harvey Vale and Paul Smyth.
Goals from across the squad
QPR do not rely on a single striker. Smyth leads the scoring with three league goals, followed by Ilias Chair, Rumarn Burrell and Madsen on two each. The team ranks among the top three in the division for goal attempts, but converts only around 11.6% of them, which explains why so many promising performances ended level.
That spread of scorers gives Stéphan options when players are missing. It also points to the main area for improvement: turning territorial control and shot volume into wins, especially at home.
The Mbengue blow
Amadou Mbengue came off the bench late in the Derby win and was stretchered off with a knee injury. Tests confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and the 24-year-old Senegalese defender is expected to miss the rest of the season after surgery. Stéphan admitted after the match that his emotions were mixed between the win and Mbengue’s injury.
Mbengue had made the right-back position his own last season, so his absence opens the door to Boy Kemper, Kealey Adamson and Tariq Lamptey, who joined on a free transfer in the summer. Stéphan pointed out that QPR have suffered few muscle injuries this season, but Mbengue’s injury adds to a familiar problem at the club with serious knee injuries.
What the numbers project
Statistical models see QPR as a mid-table side with room to push higher. Footyntel’s projection currently puts their most likely finish at 10th, with a 22.5% chance of reaching the play-offs and a relegation risk below 2%. That would still be an improvement on last season’s 15th place.
The next month will test whether the early-season defensive record returns. After Swansea at home on 24 October, QPR travel to Southampton before home games against Burnley and Lincoln City. Results in that stretch will show whether the Birmingham defeat was a blip or the start of a slide down the table.
