News in brief: MK Dons keeper joins United, Fulham youngster’s loan, Compton fails but Lapthorne shines
Jordan Evans
The Fulham full-back has extended his loan at Oxford United until the end of the season.
The 20-year-old has made five appearances for the League Two club so far, including Thursday’s 2-0 win over Millwall in the Football League Trophy.
Josh Bohui
The Brentford youth team’s leading scorer has been called up for the England Under-17 squad for next month’s Algarve Tournament in Portugal.
The 16-year-old, who signed a two-year scholarship deal with the Bees last summer, will hope to feature in games against Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands.
Hayes & Yeading United
MK Dons goalkeeper Charlie Burns has joined United on a month-long loan deal. The 20-year-old will be with the National League South side until 14 February, having previously had spells at Cambridge City and Truro City.
Nick Compton
The Middlesex batsman fell for 26 on the second day of England’s third Test against South Africa in Johannesburg.
Coming in at number three, after the early dismissal of Alex Hales, Compton hit four fours in an otherwise patient innings before edging to slip off Kagiso Rabada. His county colleague Steven Finn took 2-50 on the first day as South Africa were bowled out for 313.
Middlesex
The club’s pre-season fixture details were released on Friday. They will start on 22 March, with a three-day match against Surrey at The Oval, before a two-day friendly with Northamptonshire at Merchant Taylors School in Northwood beginning 29 March and a one-day game against the same opponent on 31 March.
Middlesex will also take on Berkshire at Falkland CC on 3 April prior to a three-day friendly with Essex at Chelmsford on 4 April. The County Championship season begins on 17 April when Warwickshire come to Lord’s.
Andy Lapthorne and Jordanne Whiley
Both wheelchair tennis stars will compete in finals at the Apia International in Sydney, a warm-up tournament ahead of the Australian Open, on Saturday.
Lapthorne will be particularly busy – he will play top seed Dylan Alcott of Australia in the quad singles final and partner Jamie Burdekin in the doubles final.
Whiley and fellow Brit Lucy Shuker lived up to their second seed billing by defeating French duo Charlotte Famin and Emmanuelle Morch in Friday’s semi-final. However, Whiley was beaten in the women’s singles at the quarter-final stage by her regular Grand Slam doubles partner Yui Kamiji.
Harlequins
Forwards Will Collier and George Merrick return to the Quins starting line-up for Sunday’s European Challenge Cup clash with Cardiff Blues. The backline is unchanged, while Mat Luamanu is named among the replacements having recovered from an injury sustained in October.
