Is a Football Match Really That Different from a Roulette Spin?
There is a specific type of West London football performance every supporter has watched at least a dozen times. The team plays well, has all the chances, then somehow ends up losing to a set-piece deflection or a rebound off a defender’s back. - Team quality differential. Manchester City against Sheffield United is not the same event as Manchester City against Arsenal. Every football fan intuitively adjusts expectations based on team quality, in a way no roulette player ever does between spins.
- Home advantage. Playing at Loftus Road or Stamford Bridge is measurably different from playing away. The home team wins roughly 46 percent of Premier League matches, the away team about 30 percent. That gap has no equivalent in roulette.
- Individual moments of brilliance. A single player making one great pass, one great save, one great strike from thirty yards, can decide a match that was otherwise fifty-fifty. Individual quality distributes unevenly across teams.
- Referee decisions. A penalty given or waved away, a card that changes the shape of the game, a marginal offside call. Officiating decisions are not random, but they are not fully predictable either, and they change match outcomes.
- Tactical shape and in-game adjustments. Managers making the right substitutions, switching formations at the right moment, or setting up specifically to counter an opponent all shape the outcome. This is skill, on both benches, mattering in real time.

- Genuine randomness on top of all that. Deflections, own goals, gusts of wind at the wrong moment, and pure chance in the way the ball bounces. This is the part of football that actually looks like roulette, and it is real, but it is only one of seven factors, not the whole picture.
The lottery framing collapses six of the seven and treats the whole match as if only the last one mattered. It rarely does.
What the Numbers Actually Say
Peer-reviewed research now quantifies where the balance actually sits. Holzmeister and Johannesson’s 2025 paper in the Journal of Sports Economics used data from the top seven European football leagues across three seasons, including the Premier League, and reached a specific finding. Roughly 40 percent of the variation in over- and underperformance across a league season is attributable to skill, with the remaining 60 percent attributable to luck.
Over a 38-match season, the standard deviation in points from skill is about 6 points. From luck, it is about 7 points. Those two numbers are close to each other, which is the mathematically precise version of what fans have always sensed.
Their simulations found that luck alone changes a team’s final league position by an average of 1.78 places. There is a 33.9 percent chance luck changes which team wins the league, and a 56 percent chance it changes the top-four Champions League places. The likelihood that luck alters the bottom three, and therefore the relegation set, sits at 75.9 percent.
The 2023/24 Premier League gave clear illustrations. Manchester City over-performed by 0.337 points per game against expected-goals model prediction, the most in the sample. Sheffield United under-performed by 0.464 points per game, the most on the other side, and the raw gap between the two teams was substantial.
What West London Actually Provides as a Case Study
The West London clubs illustrate both sides of the divide neatly. QPR’s Championship yo-yo years have looked like pure randomness at times, with the same squad producing wildly different results season to season. Then a manager change lands, and the pattern rearranges around real underlying quality.
Brentford is the clearest local example of skill dominating over luck. Matthew Benham’s data-first approach at both the club and the associated Smartodds operation delivered promotion to the Premier League and steady survival since. That result is not what a pure-luck model would predict for a club with modest historical resources.
Fulham’s promotion-and-relegation history sits somewhere in the middle. Squads have been assembled that were arguably good enough to stay up, and squads have been assembled that were not, and the outcomes have broadly matched what the underlying quality suggested.
Chelsea’s post-2022 era has been the counter-case. Very high spending has coincided with results below what any pre-season model would predict, which is a hint that money and skill are not the same variable and neither guarantees the other.
What This Means for Watching Football
If 40 percent of what happens is skill and 60 percent is luck, football is neither the meritocracy purists claim nor the roulette wheel frustrated fans accuse it of being. It is a genuine middle case, and the middle is where most of the interesting parts live.
For West London supporters, the practical implication is that reading too much into a single result is risky, and reading too little into a season is riskier. Match-to-match variance is high enough that individual games say less than they feel like they say. Season-to-season, the underlying quality tends to show through.
The next time a game ends with a set-piece deflection deciding it, the football-is-a-lottery mutter still holds some truth. But only some.
