Ipswich boss praises ‘outstanding’ Arsenal youngster

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy labelled Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles an “outstanding player” after the teenager’s performance in the 2-2 draw at Brentford.

Maitland-Niles, still only 17, made his debut for Ipswich at Griffin Park after signing on a season-long loan.

McCarthy also gave a senior debut to another youngster Josh Emmanuel and the manager was delighted with both players.

He said: “Ainsley Maitland-Niles, from walking in the door, is just an outstanding player. He’s a confident lad and a talented boy.

“When you sign players, you want them to produce performances and they both did.

“Josh has really stepped up this summer. He came back a man.”

However, McCarthy was disappointed that two goals conceded in injury time spoiled an otherwise good performance at Brentford.

He said: “It’s annoying. We should have won the game. We conceded two really poor goals.

“I was really delighted with the way we played, I thought we were terrific. As an away performance, I thought it was excellent. I’m sure their coach is ecstatic, it’s like a win for them.”
