Hughes backing Di Matteo and salutes former club for Barca win

QPR boss Mark Hughes has hailed his former club Chelsea for managing to beat Barcelona last week.

Hughes, who remains a favourite among Chelsea fans and also played for Barca, was at Stamford Bridge to see last Wednesday’s game.

“It was a fantastic result for the club. They had to be really disciplined and they got the job done,” he said.

“It was difficult because they didn’t have a great deal of possession, but they maximised their opportunity when it presented itself. It sets up the return leg fantastically well.

“I wish them well. It’s a huge game for them and still a big ask. I think everyone understands that.”

And Hughes praised his former Blues team-mate Roberto Di Matteo for the job he has done since being played in charge.

The Welshman said: “He’s doing really well. All you can do as a manager is win football matches and that’s what he’s been able to do.

“He’s brought Chelsea through a difficult period and is producing the goods. All credit to him.”
