Half-time: Watford 1 Brentford 0

Odion Ighalo scored two minutes before half-time to put Watford ahead at Vicarage Road.

The striker was adjudged to have been fouled by Tony Craig and saw his resulting penalty saved by David Button but was able to slot home from the rebound.

Earlier, Ighalo headed Lloyd Dyer’s delivery against the bar and Bees full-back Jake Bidwell needed to produce a fine last-ditch challenge to thwart Diego Fabbrini.

Brentford then began to assert themselves and Hornets keeper Heurelho Gomes was called into action, saving from Jonathan Douglas at the far post following Alan Judge’s cross.

Jota then created a chance for himself with some lovely skill to beat two men before his effort was pushed away by Gomes.

And Judge, who has been excellent in midfield, volleyed narrowly wide four minutes before the break.

But just as Brentford seemed to be getting on top, they found themselves behind.

Brentford: Button; McCormack, Tarkowski, Craig, Bidwell; Douglas, Diagouraga; Odubajo, Judge, Jota; Gray.
Subs: Bonham, Dean, Tebar, Toral, Betinho, Pritchard, Proschwitz.
