Fulham face an uphill task at Anfield, where goals from Martin Skrtel and Steven Gerrard put the home side in control.

Skrtel thumped home on eight minutes after the Whites were unable to clear Gerrard’s corner.

Liverpool should have doubled their lead when Luis Suarez pulled the ball back from the right for Daniel Agger, who contrived to shoot over from two yards out.

But there was no escape for the visitors when they were split open by Stewart Downing’s superb through-ball to Gerrard, who fired past Mark Schwarzer.

Keeper Schwarzer’s near-post save prevented Suarez making it three shortly before the break.

Boss Martin Jol made three changes to Fulham’s team for the game, with Giorgos Karagounis, Alex Kacaniklic and Ashkan Dejagah coming in for Damien Duff, Hugo Rodallega and the suspended Steve Sidwell.
