Groves to conclude big day of sport

Hammersmith boxing prospect George Groves will round off a busy day of local sport.

The unbeaten 23-year-old defends his British and European super-middleweight titles against experienced Liverpudlian Paul Smith at Wembley Arena this evening.

Chelsea fan Groves will be hoping for a pre-fight morale booster when his team face struggling Blackburn at Ewood Park this afternoon.

After recent problems on and off the pitch, the Blues are looking to get back to winning ways following back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

The league leaders are coming.

Troubled Blackburn are in the bottom three but a win would take them to within a point of Fulham, who play Tottenham tomorrow.

QPR face a tough task today, with leaders Manchester City visiting Loftus Road.

And in League One, Brentford are away to Sheffield Wednesday.

Our non-League teams are also in action, with Hayes & Yeading travelling to Stockport in the Conference, while Hampton & Richmond will attempt to climb off the bottom of Conference South when they host Eastbourne.

Elsewhere, Harrow Borough are at home to AFC Hornchurch in the FA Cup second qualifying round, with Wealdstone facing a tricky away tie against Margate.

In rugby union, Premiership leaders Harlequins travel to face fourth-placed Bath.

Then tonight, Groves takes on former British champion Smith in a Bonfire Night showdown that could pave the way for a world title shot in 2012.

Groves is provisionally scheduled to enter the ring at around 10.45pm and the contest is live on BoxNation (Sky channel 456) or can be watched online by clicking here.
