Silva and Cucurella could return for Chelsea

Thiago Silva and Marc Cucurella could return to the Chelsea squad for Saturday’s derby against Brentford.

Cucurella has been out for almost three months with an ankle injury but is back in training and seemingly close to a return to action.

Boss Mauricio Pochettino said on Friday afternoon that both players would be assessed and that there was a “possibility” they could be in the squad.

Christopher Nkunku is facing another spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury – a blow for Chelsea and the summer signing, who suffered a knee injury during pre-season and had to wait until December to make his debut.

Pochettino said: “We may see him in a few weeks. He’s unlucky – it is bad luck to suffer again. It’s tough for the player and a difficult season for him.”

Pochettino also admitted it is “difficult to see” defender Wesley Fofana, who is out with a long-term knee injury, playing again this season.
