Ex-Liverpool man: Gerrard and Carragher ‘didn’t like Benitez that much’

Stephane Henchoz has told talkSPORT he is not surprised Rafael Benitez is having problems at Chelsea.

And the former Liverpool defender claimed that Anfield stalwarts Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher “didn’t like him that much” when the Spaniard was in charge at the Merseyside club.

Benitez guided Liverpool to their 2005 Champions League triumph while their manager and remains a popular figure among their fans.

But he is deeply unpopular among Chelsea supporters and there have been reports he has fallen out with players at Stamford Bridge, which Benitez and Blues skipper John Terry both recently denied.

And Henchoz said: “I think he’s a very good manager in that he knows a lot about football and the details.

“The only problem for me is his man management and I’m not surprised things aren’t going so well for him at Chelsea.

“I think he has some arrogance about him. The way he speaks to the players and the way he treats the players is not always the best.

“Even if you are professional you still would like the manager to have a few words and speak a bit with you. Rafa Benitez only speaks to you when he needs you or wants something from you.

“And I know that even Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher, who spent a lot of time with him, didn’t like him that much.

“When Chelsea signed him as manager, I was sure that things would not go smoothly.”
