Euro 2020 Experience Can Take Mount to Next Level

Chelsea: Mason Mount

It has been a European Championships to remember for Chelsea star Mason Mount, as England secured their place in a major final for the first time in 55 years.

The Blues’ star has been a key figure in helping the Three Lions to the business end of the competition, and the experience he will take back to Stamford Bridge can see him improve even further next season.

From Rams to Three Lions’ Starter

It has been a pretty steep rise for Mount over the past few seasons, with the attacking midfielder’s tireless efforts helping him become established as a regular starter for his country. While the likes of Harry Kane will be earning plenty of backers in the odds on the player of the tournament, Mount has played a big role in taking England to the final at Wembley. Manager Gareth Southgate is clearly a big fan of the 22-year-old, whose energy in the final third has seen him become such a creative outlet for the Three Lions at Euro 2020.

t was only in 2019 that Mount suffered Championship play-off final disappointment on his loan spell with Derby County. Since then, the playmaker returned to Chelsea and forced his way to become a regular starter in an extremely competitive squad at Stamford Bridge. To then go and help Thomas Tuchel’s side go on and win the Champions League final, just shows how far Mount has come in a relatively short space of time.

Lampard Deserves Credit

Few would argue Mount might not be in the same place as he is now without former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard. It was Lampard who helped the Portsmouth-born midfielder flourish during his time with the Rams at Pride Park in the 2018-19 Championship campaign. It was not a given that Mount would be a first-team regular when Lampard took the reins as manager of Chelsea the following season, and the youngster was made to work for minutes on the field.

Slowly but surely, Mount managed to find himself a regular feature in the Premier League and was a key figure for Lampard before the manager was dismissed at the start of 2021. Mount had to do work to impress the new man coming into the club in Tuchel, and he did just that to eventually earn a starting role in the Champions League final against Manchester City.

Even More to Come

Having enjoyed an impressive Euro 2020 campaign on a personal level with England, Chelsea will be hoping to reap the rewards of Mounts’ experience at the major tournament. After a remarkable end to the season to win the Champions League, the Blues are looking to mount a serious title challenge in the Premier League next term.

A price can’t be put on how much Mount will have learned during his month with the Three Lions at Euro 2020, and Blues’ fans will be excited to see what comes next from the Chelsea academy product.
