Conte ponders future tactical change

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte says David Luiz’s return gives him the option of switching to three at the back in the future.

Conte has been widely tipped to eventually make the change, having favoured a back three rather than four during his spells in charge of Juventus and the Italian national team.

And the recent re-signing of defender Luiz from Paris St-Germain gives the Blues a potential chance to play with an extra centre-back, while Kurt Zouma is regaining his fitness following a long-term knee injury and Branislav Ivanovic can also play in the middle.

Conte said: “It (Luiz rejoining) can be an opportunity – a solution. It (a back three) can happen in the future.

“This squad can play with 3-4-3, not 3-52. With the characteristics of the players we have, you can play with a 3-4-3.”

Meanwhile, Conte has pledged to improve Luiz as a player and believes the Brazilian can become one of the world’s top defenders.
