Chelsea assessing new James injury ‘week by week’

Reece James is nursing a knee injury and is being assessed “week by week”, Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso says.

Reece, who has been plagued by injury problems, missed the Blues’ 5-1 win against Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge.

Alonso explained afterwards: “He felt something and we did tests. He had little issues with the knee.
“We will see how long he is going to be and we will assess week by week.”

Moises Caicedo returned to the starting line-up after injury – his first outing for Alonso’s side since August.

He lined up in midfield alongside Jordan Henderson, who scored twice in a resounding victory.

“In terms of positioning, they help each other well,” said Alonso.

“They give presence, they give stability as well. They are going to be the ones that are helping the rest.

“As well, defensively, they give good balance. It’s fundamental we get that area strong.”
