Backing Chelsea could be a wise move when it comes to soccer betting

Chelsea go into the international break third in the Premier League and still within touching distance of Liverpool.

When it comes to soccer betting, there’s no doubt that leaders Liverpool are now the overwhelming favourites to win the title. The Reds are eight points clear of both Chelsea second-placed Leicester. Manchester City have slipped to fourth but are still seen by many oddsmakers as the strongest challengers to Liverpool.

But Chelsea should not be discounted. Their first season under boss Frank Lampard is shaping into a memorable one and they could yet be dark horses in the title race.

The young guns

Hampered by a Fifa-imposed transfer ban and having lost star man Eden Hazard to Real Madrid during the summer, Lampard inherited a difficult situation.

But the emphasis on youth has been paying off in a big way, with several academy products making the most of the chance to establish themselves as first-team regulars.

Tammy Abraham has 10 goals to his name already this season, Mason Mount has been a revelation in midfield and Callum Hudson-Odoi’s return from injury has been a major boost. Expect young Billy Gilmour, who looks hugely promising, to emerge in the next year or so too. There has also been the emergence of right-back Reece James, who looks set to oust captain Cesar Azpilicueta from the side.

Experienced players to return

While the youngsters making their mark has been encouraging, there is no doubt that the return of a couple of experienced players from injury will be a further boost.

As impressive as Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic have been in his absence, N’Golo Kante is still one of the best midfielders in the world and if he can get fully fit following a series of injury problems, Chelsea will be even stronger in the middle of the pitch.

While they have been exciting going forward, the Blues have looked vulnerable at the back and the return of defender Antonio Rudiger cannot come soon enough. Rudiger recently had surgery on a pelvic injury and should be back in action soon.

Possible signings

There could also be a chance to add to the squad when the transfer window opens in January. The transfer ban is currently due to run until the end of the season but a successful appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) would see it lifted in the new year. That would enable Lampard to bring in new signings and potentially make the squad even stronger – so don’t rule Chelsea out of the title race.
