Alonso delighted by Estevao impact after first league start

Xabi Alonso said Estevao showed exactly why he deserved his first league start of the season after the teenager impressed in Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
The Brazilian was one of Chelsea’s biggest attacking threats and was unfortunate not to get on the scoresheet.
Estevao had two efforts ruled out for offside and had six shots during an eye-catching display at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso revealed after the match that the youngster had been told he would start shortly after Chelsea’s previous game against Tottenham.
“We spoke after Tottenham and he knew he was going to be playing today,” Alonso said.
“He has had the best response to show that he deserves more, that he was prepared, and that’s what you want from a football player.”
“I’m very happy for him.”
The Chelsea boss felt Estevao justified the decision to bring him into the starting line-up and suggested the tactical demands of facing Manchester United suited the youngster’s qualities.
The 19-year-old repeatedly troubled United’s defence with his movement and direct running, helping Chelsea create several dangerous moments.
Alonso pointed to the number of chances Estevao helped generate and believes his performance underlined his growing influence within the squad.
“I think he’s been a threat”, said Alonso.
“He has created many chances, many situations where we could score.”
Although he was unable to find the net, Estevao went close on a number of occasions and drew warm applause from the home crowd when he was eventually replaced late on in the 87th minute.
“He deserves to enjoy his game and deserves to have a good connection with the crowd,” Alonso said.
“He was really close to scoring that goal.
“At the end he fought really hard, he was tired and it has been a good day for him.”
For Alonso, it was further evidence that the highly-rated youngster is ready to make a bigger contribution as Chelsea’s season progresses.
