Adams tests positive for banned substance

Chelsea-based heavyweight boxer Ali Adams has tested positive for a banned substance.

The Iraq-born 30-year-old has been suspended from the sport pending an investigation. He strongly denies any intentional wrongdoing.

He is thought to have given the positive test following his fight with Harlesden’s former Olympic champion Audley Harrison, who stopped him in the fourth round of their clash in May.

Adams believes the substance might have been in medication he was using for a neck injury.

In an e-mail published by Boxing News, Adams wrote: “I can confirm that I tested positive for a prohibited substance and that I have been provisionally suspended from boxing until UK Anti-Doping have completed their investigations.

“It is not clear yet how this substance entered my body, although I believe it may have come from treatment I received for a neck injury.

“I would like to make it clear that I did not and would never intentionally take any banned substances.

“I am totally against the use of drugs in sport and I would never try to enhance my performance by taking them. I hope to resolve this matter as soon as possible.”
