Onuoha’s goal gives QPR victory at Wigan

Wigan 0 QPR 1

Nedum Onuoha’s goal four minutes into the second half gave QPR victory at the DW Stadium.

Sebastian Polter’s presence prevented Wigan from clearing Jake Bidwell’s free-kick and after the German laid the ball off to Rangers’ captain, Onuoha fired into the net.

Polter came closest to scoring for the visitors during a cagey first half, heading wide from a free-kick by Yeni Ngbakoto, who earlier saw a 25-yard effort comfortably saved by keeper Adam Bogdan.

Wigan thought they had gone ahead five minutes before the break when Craig Morgan headed into the net from Luke Garbutt’s cross, but the flag was raised for offside.

Keeper Alex Smithies made a fine save to preserve QPR’s lead when he dived low to his right to keep out a shot from Garbutt.

Rangers then survived late scares when Max Power shot narrowly wide and when Will Grigg headed over.

And James Perch denied his former side an injury-time equaliser with a vital challenge to thwart Grigg at the far post.

QPR: Smithies; Perch, Onuoha, Hall, Bidwell; Henry, Luongo; Cousins, Chery (Borysiuk 84), Ngbakoto; Polter.
Subs not used: Ingram, Washington, El Khayati, Shodipo, Kakay, Paul.
