Poyet appears to have cooled Cesar interest

Sunderland appear to have cooled their interest in QPR goalkeeper Julio Cesar.

The Wearsiders recently made an enquiry about the 34-year-old Brazilian – the first approach Rangers have received for him despite reported interest from a host of clubs since he was made available at the end of last season.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet, who has had a good relationship with R’s goalkeeping coach Kevin Hitchcock since their days as team-mates at Chelsea, indicated that he was considering signing Cesar.

But Rangers have heard nothing further and there has been speculation that Poyet is looking elsewhere for a keeper.

QPR manager Harry Redknapp said: “We had an enquiry from a Premier League club but nothing seems to have come from that.

“As I’ve said before, he’s an excellent goalkeeper and he needs to go somewhere and play.”

Cesar was keen to stay in London and join Arsenal in the summer but the Gunners showed no real interest despite reports they were battling to sign him.

Supposed interest from a number of European clubs also came to nothing.

He has not played a first-team match this season for Rangers, who would happily let him go on a free transfer.
