Simpson is desperate to break QPR record

Danny Simpson says QPR’s players are determined to break a long-standing club record this weekend.

Simpson has been a mainstay in a defence that has gone seven consecutive games without conceding a goal – matching the record set in the 1966/1967 and 1946/1947 seasons.

An eighth straight shut-out on Saturday against Barnsley would therefore see the current Rangers team make history.

“Seven clean sheets on the bounce, especially in this league, is a great achievement,” said Simpson.

“I only found out about the record on Wednesday and it was in the back of my mind [against Middlesbrough].

“That’s our job – to stop goals going in. We want to go one step further next week and we want to make it eight.”

James Vaughan’s strike for Huddersfield in August is the last league goal Rangers conceded.

Assistant manager Kevin Bond said: “We’ve got a decent record now, the players are very aware of it and they are keen to keep it going.

“It’s all about having good defenders. Richard Dunne is a classy player and knows what to do. He strolls through games, puts himself in the right areas and the ball is like a magnet to his head.

“Clint Hill and Nedum Onuoha have done marvellous jobs. Danny Simpson’s come in and been a fantastic professional.

“It’s not just the back four. They have been the basis, but we’ve got a quality boy in goal in Rob Green, who’s been absolutely tremendous.”
