McClaren bemoans QPR’s poor defending

Steve McClaren admitted QPR’s defending in their 2-1 defeat at Wigan was unacceptable.

Both Latics goals came after lapses at the back by Rangers, who almost snatched a point.

After substitute Bright Osayi-Samuel pulled a goal back with a deflected strike, Toni Leistner fired against the bar.

But ultimately Rangers paid the price for poor defending in the build up to the goals they conceded.

The first came after Josh Windass scored after getting between Joel Lynch and Leistner, whose failure to cut out a cross later led to Leon Clarke making it 2-0.

“The two goals we conceded from our point of view are horrendous goals,” R’s boss McClaren said.

“We talk about people doing their jobs and we didn’t do it. We didn’t defend as we have in the past and we need to get back to that.

“You can’t concede two goals like that and expect to win football matches away from home.

“The defence has been a key reason why we’ve been able to do what we’ve done this season, but in recent weeks we’ve lost that platform.”
