Redknapp: Only Cole and Baines are better than Assou-Ekotto

Harry Redknapp believes Benoit Assou-Ekotto is one of the three best left-backs in England.

The Cameroon international was out of favour under manager Andre Villas-Boas at Tottenham, enabling Redknapp to sign him on a season-long loan.

Assou-Ekotto was a regular in the Spurs side when the R’s boss was in charge at White Hart Lane and now finds himself playing in the Championship.

But Redknapp insisted: “He’s in the top three left-backs in the country. He’s too good for most teams in the Premier League.

“He’s a top player and never missed a game for me at Tottenham, where he was my left-back. He played in every game – in the Champions League quarter-finals.

“There’s only Ashley Cole and Baines you’d take in front of him maybe. I couldn’t think of too many others. He’s top-class and could play in any team.”

  • probably why you are not a top manager and Harry is.Rose in front of Benny? thats one of the wheels to fall off AVB's wagon. he then plays Vertonghen out of position at LB and the rot continues Anyone disagree that Harry would have had Kaboul and vertonghen at the heart of the defence with Walker at RB and Benny at LB.As for midfield , I dont think harry would have wasted his money on these probably get a top class Modric replacement and a real top striker not Soldado though not a Harry type player. Too late now though we are left with the mess that is Daniel Levy's legacy ...............its called AVB!! Wouldnt be surprised If Harry's QPR finish above Spurs next year probably beating them at WHL next year just to rub it in.

  • As much as I like Benny, he isn't the 3rd best LB in the country! He has a great game once every couple of months, but he's a bloody liability half the time.

  • Hey Pat - do you realise that every team has a press conference before every game? A manager gets asked a question, he gives an answer.
    'How good is BAE?'

  • When will this guy ever shut up. He messed up with his motor mouth at spurs and now managing at lower level and still goes on with his motor mouth.
