Ramsey stands by decision to select Furlong

Chris Ramsey stood by his decision to select teenage full-back Darnell Furlong for QPR’s 3-1 defeat at Crystal Palace.

The 19-year-old, playing partly because Mauricio Isla has been struggling with a knee problem, was given a torrid time by Yannick Bolasie before being substituted at half-time.

Bolasie set up Palace’s first two goals and Ramsey admitted he knew the Eagles were strong on both flanks.

However, asked if he regretted picking Furlong, head coach Ramsey said: “No, because behind the scenes there are problems with injuries and stuff like that.

“I’m not going around moaning about injuries. You have your 25 and it’s then whoever is fit.”

Ramsey added: “We only really failed to cope twice. Let’s be honest, there wasn’t a tide of crosses coming in.

“But in the Premier League you’ve got to be up to it. The fact we’re in this position is because of those key moments and we need to do better.”

Rangers have lost five of their six matches since Ramsey was placed at the helm following the departure of Harry Redknapp.

They remain deep in the relegation mire but Ramsey insisted the commitment of the players could not be questioned and said Furlong was taken off because he too has been nursing an injury.

“He didn’t come off for any reason other than he has had an injury himself,” Ramsey said.

“He has a calf problem, felt it stiffen and it wouldn’t have been fair to keep him on.”
