Sheffield Wednesday had gone close when Fernando Forestieri headed a 21st-minute corner towards Daniel Pudil, who volleyed against the bar from close range.

Tjaronn Chery had a couple of early efforts for Rangers, both of which were saved by stand-in keeper Cameron Dawson, who made his full debut for the Owls after Kieran Westwood was ruled out with a back injury.

Conor Washington did find the Wednesday net after being found by Ben Gladwin’s cross but the goal was rightly disallowed for a clear foul on Jack Hunt.

It was the hosts who eventually broke the deadlock and they deserved the points.

However, Rangers would have levelled but for a superb second-half save by Dawson, who denied Nedum Onuoha following Chery’s delivery into the box.

The visitors, unbeaten in their previous five games, had a decent spell after Sebastian Polter was brought on as a substitute, but they rarely looked like scoring – until Tom Lees cleared off the line from Chery after an injury-time mix-up.
