QPR stop the rot in Redknapp’s first game

With Stephane Mbia sitting in front of their back four, QPR made a solid start to Harry Redknapp’s reign as manager.

And they might have taken all three points had substitute Shaun Wright-Phillips been able to apply the finish following a slick move.

Rangers were largely toothless in attack but did create some chances, with Djibril Cisse twice going close to giving them the lead at a rain-swept Stadium of Light.

Cisse sent a long-range effort inches wide and had another tipped away by Sunderland keeper Simon Miglonet.

And after Jamie Mackie broke into the area and saw his shot parried by Miglonet, Adel Taarabt’s goal-bound follow-up was blocked by defender Carlos Cuellar.

At the other end, Julio Cesar produced a good save to deny Steven Fletcher late in the first half.

The new Rangers manager made three changes, with Esteban Granero, Samba Diakite and Jose Bosingwa restored to the starting line-up in place of Alejandro Faurlin, Shaun Derry and Kieron Dyer.

And Redknapp was forced into a change at the interval, when Cesar was replaced by Rob Green after the Brazilian keeper picked up what appeared to be a groin injury.

Green pulled off a fine reaction save on 64 minutes to keep out Cuellar’s header.

Rangers remain bottom of the table and without a league win this season.
