Andreas Weimann’s goal condemned troubled QPR to another defeat.
Rangers, now 13th in the Championship table, defended well in the first half but conceded the game’s only goal six minutes into the second.
And they ended the match with 10 men after James Perch was sent off for a second bookable offence late on.
Derby’s winner came shortly after Jacob Butterfield had fired against the R’s post.
Richard Keogh cushioned a corner into the path of Weimann, who steered the ball home with the outside of the his left boot from 12 yards out.
The result increases the pressure on Rangers head coach Chris Ramsey, whose side have won only two of their last 10 matches and have failed to score in three of their last four.
Ramsey, without the injured Clint Hill, and having come in for scathing criticism from fans this season, made significant changes.
Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Tjraonn Chery and Massimo Luongo were absent, the fit-again Charlie Austin returned to the starting line-up, and Yun Suk-Young played in a left-sided role – the South Korean’s first appearance of the season.
Yun gave Rangers some much-needed energy and they showed some endeavour, but lacked creativity.
Austin, Yun and Daniel Tozser all fired over in the first half, but the visitors never looked likely to find an equaliser after going behind.
Perch was dismissed in the 90th minute following a foul on Chris Martin.

Leaving 3 of your best players out and not even on the bench is unbelievable it just proves Ramsay has lost the plot big time.
I keep hearing he's a good coach but I beg too differ he can't coach or manage. Time to get rid Tony F
Ramsey was always a cheap option to replace Rednapp. He is obviously a nice guy but he is underqualified and out of his depth. On paper we have one of the best squads in the division. The board need to act fast as we are in free fall
Key points:
1) Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Tjraonn Chery and Massimo Luongo absent?
2) Henry has played in every defeat....
3) Chris Ramsey is a coach - not a manager!
4) We hear regularly that QPR are in a so called consolidative/transitional phase where they are going to develop and nurture our younger talents, so where are they?
5) Why have we the oldest or nearly the oldest squad in the division? Does that bode well for building the future?
6) Tony Fernandez must be able to see what is going on, the lack of direction, the poor managerial decisions on the pitch. Surely Tony has some footballing knowledge...
Decisions to make:
Are we truly building for the future? If so then play youth and stay up by the skin of our teeth.
Play with the current squad and if by a miracle we go up via the play-offs then we'll have to replace at least 75% of the first team anyway. Doesn't make sense!
Get a dynamic manager in who can play youth and develop a new squad. Oldest player on the pitch should be no more than 28!
Make Clint Hill our defence coach!
Isn't it time we had a real strategy that we stick to?
I don't mind seeing Rangers getting beat, I just don't like it when it is for nothing!
We are in danger of mid-table obscurity. But that is about it.
Face facts. An aging, tired, leggy squad managed by a tactically naive and out of his depth coach are heading for tier 3 unless big and fast changes are made. We are in danger of doing a Wigan, Civentry or Portsmouth.
