QPR defender’s injury a ‘great shame’ – Warburton

QPR manager Mark Warburton admits Conor Masterson’s injury is a “great shame” given the need for the defender to get first-team football.

Masterson recently suffered the injury while playing for Swindon, where his spell on loan was seen as a crucial part of his development.


The 22-year-old had not made a senior appearance prior to his move to west London after being released by Liverpool in 2019.

He has impressed in his limited first-team outings since then and Rangers manager Warburton had long been keen for him to go out on loan in order to get more valuable game time.

“He’s a young player who needed to go out (on loan) and was getting the games,” said Warburton.

“Whether it (the injury) was down to the fixture schedule or down to the fact that he hadn’t played a lot of football and then goes out and plays. who knows?

“But the fact is it’s a nasty injury and he loses a lot of football and it’s a great shame because he was progressing nicely.”

The full extent of Masterson’s injury is still being established but it could rule him out for the rest of the season.

“It looks a nasty hamstring injury,” Warburton admitted.

“He’s had a couple of injections and we’ll find out (the extent of the injury), but it’s several weeks.

“You don’t know how people will react with certain injuries, but it’s a nasty one.”
